Principal’s Message
Athletics Carnival
Amazingly our Athletics Carnival was finally held at the Sydney Japanese International School at Terrey Hills. Thank you to Ms Abraham, our former deputy principal, who is the Head of the Japanese School. Ms Abraham kindly let us use her school's playground over two mornings. The first day was quite sunny but on the second day we had some drizzle but we pushed through and successfully completed all events.
Thank you to Mr Rawlings and Jane and Peter Vassella for your ability to plan and then pivot three times as the rain prevented our earlier carnivals from running. Thank you also to our parent volunteers: Belinda Panic, Chris Henry, Meriki Barnes, Leon Allen, Ava Agnew, Bridget Clarke, Megan Butchart, Maria Philips, Tora Hogg, Eva Yu and Chris Henry. Thank you to our teachers who also assisted: Mrs Howe, Mr Gorrie, Ms Hargreaves, Miss Schoeman and Miss Crowe.

Book Week Parade
Thank you to our staff and students for helping to create a successful Book Week parade! The weather was on our side for the morning and everyone seemed to have a fabulous time.

Scholastic Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair was a great success and the school received $2400 in the form of reward points and we have bought books worth $600 for the school from the Book Fair. Thanks to Shalini and the following team of volunteers for all of your hard work: Suzanne Nesbitt, Justine Burton, Anita Hajetian, Celina Biguetti, Katherine Kirk, Arezoo Sami, Roshell Boulton, Karla Hollitzer, Lia Sugarevski and Julie Samowitz.

Science Extension Program Opportunity
Our school is hosting a Gateways Gifted Education workshop for our students on Monday 20 October for Years 1, 2 and 3 and Wednesday 22 October for Years 4, 5 and 6. The workshop is a full day of exploring science and is limited to 22 students each day. The theme for our October workshops is Breaking New Ground.
I wanted to share the upcoming workshop so as a family you can consider if this is something you want your child to do as it is outside of the core curriculum and costs $125 per student for the day. As places are limited, it is best if your child has a natural curiosity and interest in science. We may be offering mathematics, English and critical thinking in 2026.
Breaking New Ground Program outcomes - Students will:
- explore specialty areas of science, using the historical discoveries of famous scientists as a springboard for exploration in our modern sciences.
- employ analytical and investigative skills to develop logical thinking and critical justifications.
- utilise various applications of the ‘Scientific Method’ through posing questions, developing and testing hypotheses and drawing conclusions.
- Learn more about the mechanics, construction, operation, and wonder of the natural world.
The note for this will be going out at the end of September however, please click on the Expression of Interest form below so I can assess the interest in this program.
After Hours Professional Learning
I am so impressed with the attitude and professionalism of our staff. I ‘caught’ this team working together after school on improving programs for the classrooms. Our students’ learning is always front and centre for our teachers and we are so very lucky to have a dedicated team of teachers.

Cyber bullying
The eSafety Commission recently surveyed over 3,000 Australian children aged 10 to 17 years to determine the prevalence of online experiences and harms, including cyberbullying. Their research found more than 1 in 2 children have been cyberbullied at some point.
eSafety’s cyberbullying guide for parents and carers can help you understand what it is, what to do if your family experiences it and how you can support young people to keep safe online. If your child is being cyberbullied, help is available: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents.

Year 4 Grade Highlight: Budding Architects at Work!
Over the past few weeks, our creative Year 4 students have been diving into the world of architecture and mathematics, exploring the concept of area in a hands on project. Each student took on the role of architect, designing their very own house with up to 15 rooms, carefully considering the size and shape of each space.
Using grid paper, students mapped out their floor plans, ensuring every room was either a square or a rectangle. They calculated the dimensions and area of each room in square metres and then determined the total cost of building their house based on the area.
To bring their designs to life, students transferred their floor plans into the Sketches School app. Here, they labelled each room, added doors, windows, and furniture placements, and decided on a scale (such as 1cm = 1m) to make their drawings accurate. They also calculated and recorded the perimeter and area of each room.
Taking their creativity to the next level, students selected one room from their floor plan to build in three dimensions using the Makers Empire app. Their 3D models included annotations showing the length and area, helping them visualise the practical application of their mathematical learning.
This project has not only strengthened students’ understanding of area and perimeter but also allowed them to unleash their imagination as designers, planners and creators. We are so proud of their enthusiasm and the skills they are developing through this interactive and engaging unit.
Well done, Year 4!

Science Week
St Ives North students celebrated National Science Week on 10 -18 August in Week 4. The 2025 school theme was “Decoding the Universe – Exploring the Unknown with Nature’s Hidden Language.” This could include exploring the science behind natural patterns, codes, signals and systems—from DNA and animal communication to weather patterns and astronomical observation.
The K-2 students learnt about forces and patterns in nature and the 3-6 students explored communication using light energy. It was an enjoyable week of activities!
