Tournament of Minds
Congratulations to our St Ives North Tournament of Minds (TOM) teams on their outstanding performances on Sunday 31 August at the interschool competition at Barker. The Social Sciences and STEM teams were magnificent in their creativity and the judges commented on their skill, planning and superb collaboration. Thank you to parents, Claire M and Cathy O for their hard work as team managers and to Mrs Stergiotis for her dedication and passion for running TOM at our school. Thank you Mrs Shacham for attending the event to support our students. A wonderful morning!

Check in Assessments complete
Our Years 3 - 6 students have completed the Department of Education annual check in assessment. The results come through quite quickly and I will present a more detailed analysis once we have had time to analyse all results.
We have secured some additional funding and have decided to use this to fund a teacher for 5 days a week to assist across the school to ensure we are meeting the needs of all of our students. We will run additional flexible groups based on class, NAPLAN and Check In results to ensure we capture all students in our continual drive to improve all students’ learning.
Father's Day Stall
Thank you to our parent community for organising the Father’s Day stall last week. All of the children enjoyed the opportunity to choose a gift. The raffle was also drawn on Friday and we had 23 very happy winners. I hope all dads had a great day on Sunday.

Term 3 Awards Day
Our Term 3 Awards Day will be held in our hall on Tuesday 16 September. The Principal’s Awards are for Curriculum Excellence. Gold awards will also be presented. Parents have been informed if their child is receiving an award. I look forward to welcoming you to our school for this special event.
Year 3 - 6 Science Club
Each Thursday, Dr Marina Allen, a parent from our school, runs a Science Club for students in Years 3-6 in our Science Room. The club is open to anyone with an interest and love of science. Please make your way to the 3-6 Science classroom if you would like to participate in the club.

A huge thank you to Ms McLachlan and Ms Brown who have begun this year’s workshops on building resilience in children. The first session was held last Tuesday. The three sessions will run after school on three consecutive Tuesdays.
Stage 2 Rocks Excursion
Thank you to the Year 3 and 4 teachers who organised this very worthwhile excursion. Thank you also to the parents who volunteered to come along as helpers. The children learnt so much and enjoyed the hands-on day as they explored the area and learnt about some of our early history.

Anti Racist Lessons
Our students in Years 3 - 6 will be participating in a short series of lessons on celebrating our multicultural and inclusive school and raising awareness of racist behaviours. Our school is proud to be an inclusive and welcoming community and we want to celebrate this. Our Year 6 leaders, with teacher guidance, will deliver the first lesson to the classes.
In the meantime, thank you to all of our families who embrace and support our multicultural and inclusive community.

Respect - I use kind words to talk through problems with friends, even if it is hard.
What does this look like in the classroom and on the playground?
- I use respect even when I feel upset
- I speak kindly about others even when they are not around
- I am inclusive of everyone
The character strengths of tolerance and empathy will help me to show respect towards others.

Festival of Instrumental Music Acacia - Opera House
What an amazing experience for our Senior String Orchestra and a few selected students from our Year 5 Chamber Strings! They went for a dress rehearsal and later in the evening performed at one of the world's best concert halls - Sydney Opera House. They performed in the combined school Festival of Instrumental Music with over 200 students. Thank you to the parent volunteers, Jenny and Cathy for assisting, as well as conductor Mr Mansukhani in the evening. They had a special guest appearance - Mr Gorrie who went to watch the evening performance. Below is the students' feedback on this wonderful experience.
Mrs Howe
Performing on the Sydney Opera House stage was nothing like playing in the school hall. Everyone waited quietly, feet tapping the wood planks almost silently while the recorder players got ready behind us for the last piece of the evening. When the conductor flicked his baton, Elvenwood started, and we all tried hard to stay in time. A few notes were missed, but for an orchestra of about two hundred, we sounded alright. At the end, the applause filled the auditorium, the conductor beckoned the cello and double basses to stand, and it felt like an important moment that no one would forget.
Tilly (5G)
Imagine the Opera house’s vivid lights illuminating your face as thousands of eyes turn in your direction. The audience breaks into thunderous applause while you bow triumphantly. Well, that’s what me and 11 other students experienced on Monday. We were given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend FOIM or the Festival of Instrumental Music. It was truly beautiful to see so many students from numerous schools come together and create a masterpiece. I hope that I can attend this remarkable event next year as well.
Evelyn (5G)
